The Zodwa Khoza Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the health and well-being of learners through school sport, is pleased to announce the commencement of the second annual Johannesburg North School League – also known as “the Wednesday League” – has been kickstarted on 8 March 2023.

The main objective of the league is to improve the health and well-being of schools by providing mass participation opportunities through active sport. This initiative aims to maximize access to school sports and promote participation in sport by initiating and implementing targeted campaigns, such as competitive tournaments and active school leagues.

One of the key priorities of the league is to encourage the participation of youth from township schools in sports development activities. The foundation recognizes the challenges faced by young people from these communities, such as drug and substance abuse and other societal ills. By engaging these students in sports activities, the foundation hopes to provide a positive outlet and promote a healthier lifestyle.

Ms. Sonono Khoza, founder and chairperson of the Zodwa Khoza Foundation, said: “We are taking steps to improve the health and well-being of schools through sports. By providing mass participation opportunities through active sports, the foundation can help students stay physically active and improve their overall health. Maximizing access to school sports and promoting participation through targeted campaigns like competitive tournaments and active school leagues can also help engage more students in sports activities and promote a culture of physical fitness in schools. This initiative can have a positive impact on students’ physical and mental health, as well as their social and emotional well-being, and can also help foster a sense of teamwork and community among students.”

The second annual Zodwa Khoza Foundation School and Johannesburg North School League promises to be an exciting event, with schools from across the region expected to participate. The foundation looks forward to a successful league and hopes to continue promoting the benefits of sports to schools and communities in the years to come.
