Before focusing on celebrating today, July 7, as the Africa Integration Day – declared as such by the African Union (AU) – let me first take you on a personal three-year journey as a full-time entrepreneur running the Brandhill Africa™ group as a Group CEO and Chairman. Embarking on this rollercoaster journey from 1 July 2020 after leaving a chequered professional job is a significant milestone that represents a courageous leap. Let me briefly reflect on the numerous opportunities that have come my way, as well as the challenges I have to overcome.

By venturing into the world of business ownership, I have unlocked a realm of possibilities that were previously constrained within the confines of a traditional job – especially the public sector. The independence and autonomy I now enjoy allow me to chart my own course and follow my passions. This newfound freedom is a powerful catalyst for innovation, enabling me to build a business based on my genuine interests and expertise.

Furthermore, full-time entrepreneurship has presented me with unlimited growth potential. I am no longer bound by the limitations imposed by others; instead, I have the freedom to expand, diversify, and explore new markets. This entrepreneurial journey provides an arena for my creativity and innovative ideas to flourish, giving me the opportunity to shape my own destiny and redefine success on my own terms.

In addition, the pursuit of passion is a remarkable advantage of entrepreneurship. By leaving behind a chequered professional job, I have given myself the chance to align my work with my deepest interests and values. The ability to build a business around something I truly care about fosters a sense of purpose, fulfillment, and satisfaction that can fuel my drive to succeed even in the face of dire challenges.

Moreover, the flexibility and work-life balance that entrepreneurship offers is a valuable opportunity. I have the ability to design my work around my personal life, pursuing hobbies and trying to maintain overall well-being – more especially considering the health difficulties I’ve encountered since November 2016.

While the opportunities are plentiful, it is crucial to acknowledge the challenges that come with full-time entrepreneurship. The journey I have undertaken is not without its hurdles and uncertainties. Financial instability has posed a significant challenge. However, as the business continued to build a reputation in addition to my personal brand, I am bound to overcome these challenges, paving the way for long-term financial stability.

The workload and time commitment associated with entrepreneurship should not be underestimated. The dedication and perseverance required to establish and grow a business demand countless hours of hard work and a willingness to take on multiple roles. Yes, I work 24/7. It is through this dedication that I have overcome some of the obstacles and achieved milestones during these three years.

Moreover, the entrepreneurial journey can be isolating at times, as the responsibility for decision-making and the weight of the business’s success or failure falls squarely on my shoulders. I have found myself multi-tasking; acquiring new skills such as web-design; and even venturing into radio broadcasting by joining Chai 101.9 FM as s jazz music presenter on Sundays. Beyond this, I have actively sought support from my networks, mentors and have also forged collaboration with like-minded entrepreneurs. This has helped me to combat feelings of loneliness and gain invaluable insights and guidance.

As I celebrate this three-year milestone, it is vital to recognise the achievements and progress I have made, both personally and professionally. The company was recognised with the “Best Brand Award” at the “Brand Leadership Awards 2021” hosted by the World Brand Congress. Furthermore, the company and I were accorded Business Excellence Awards by the US-based World Confederation of Businesses in 2022. The World CEO Rankings Board has nominated me in 2020 and 2022 as “The World’s Best CEO” – and in the latter year I was ranked 16 out of 645 nominees from across the world. Each challenge I have faced has been an opportunity for growth and learning. By embracing these opportunities and confronting the challenges head-on, I have forged a path that is uniquely mine, defined by resilience, tenacity, determination and a commitment to success.

As you continue on my entrepreneurial journey, may this anniversary serve as a reminder of the incredible potential that lies ahead. Our country needs more individuals who have the courage to follow their dreams, take risks, and shape their own destinies. By celebrating this milestone, I hope to inspire others to embark on their own entrepreneurial endeavours and contribute to a society that thrives on innovation, creativity and passion.

Africa Integration Day

On the 7th of July, the African Union proudly commemorates Africa Integration Day, a momentous occasion that brings together the diverse nations of the continent to celebrate their shared aspirations, achievements, and the spirit of unity that has propelled Africa forward. This day serves as a reminder of the tremendous progress made on the path towards integration and encourages us to forge ahead with renewed commitment and determination.

Africa Integration Day is not merely a symbolic event but a testament to the unwavering dedication of African nations to consolidate their efforts for the collective advancement of the continent. It marks a significant milestone in the long-standing quest for Pan-African unity and the realisation of a united Africa, a dream that has echoed throughout the continent since the days of independence.

Over the years, the African Union has played a pivotal role in fostering cooperation, collaboration, and integration among African nations. This continental body has provided a platform for African leaders to come together, engage in dialogue, and chart a course towards shared prosperity and development. Africa Integration Day serves as a tribute to the tireless work of the African Union and its member states in pursuit of the African Renaissance.

The benefits of integration are manifold. Through increased cooperation and unity, African nations can leverage their collective strengths to address common challenges, such as poverty, inequality, conflict, and disease. Integration promotes the free movement of goods, services, and people across borders, facilitating trade, investment, and tourism. It also enhances regional infrastructure development, connectivity, and resource sharing, creating a conducive environment for sustainable economic growth.

Africa Integration Day provides an opportunity to reflect on the progress achieved so far. From the establishment of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to the ongoing efforts to strengthen regional economic communities, the continent is witnessing remarkable strides towards integration. The AfCFTA, in particular, holds immense potential to unlock Africa’s economic potential, stimulate intra-African trade, and foster industrialisation and diversification.

Moreover, Africa Integration Day invites us to envision the future of the continent. As we celebrate the strides made, we must also remain committed to the unfinished agenda of integration. We must redouble our efforts to address the barriers that hinder integration, including infrastructure gaps, bureaucratic hurdles, and historical divisions. African governments must prioritise investment in human capital, innovation, and technological advancements to drive the continent’s transformation.

Beyond the political and economic realms, Africa Integration Day celebrates the rich cultural diversity that defines Africa. It is an opportunity to appreciate the vibrant traditions, languages, arts, and customs that make Africa a tapestry of beauty and heritage. By embracing our cultural diversity, we can build bridges of understanding and unity, fostering a sense of shared identity and purpose among the people of Africa.

As we mark Africa Integration Day, let us remember the historic leaders who paved the way for our progress, such as Kwame Nkrumah, Julius Nyerere, and Haile Selassie. Their visionary leadership and unwavering belief in the potential of a united Africa continue to inspire us today. Let us also acknowledge the contributions of young Africans, who are driving change and shaping the future of the continent. Their passion, innovation, and determination serve as a beacon of hope for a brighter Africa.

Africa Integration Day is a time for celebration, reflection, and recommitment. It reminds us of the immense potential that lies within the continent when we stand united. As we continue on the path towards integration, let us harness the power of unity to build a prosperous, peaceful, and inclusive Africa. Together, we can overcome challenges, seize opportunities, and create a better future for all Africans.

In the spirit of Africa Integration Day, let us also recognise the invaluable role of African women in driving the continent’s progress. Women have been at the forefront of grassroots movements, advocating for social justice, gender equality, and inclusive development. Their contributions are instrumental in shaping the future of Africa, and it is essential that their voices and experiences are amplified and integrated into all aspects of decision-making and policy formulation.

Furthermore, Africa Integration Day is an occasion to deepen regional partnerships and collaboration beyond economic and political spheres. It encourages African nations to strengthen ties in areas such as education, healthcare, environmental conservation, and technology. By pooling resources, sharing best practices, and engaging in joint research and development, African countries can tackle common challenges more effectively and accelerate progress towards sustainable development goals.

The celebration of Africa Integration Day should not be limited to the African continent alone. It is an opportunity to engage with the international community and forge meaningful partnerships based on mutual respect, cooperation, and shared interests. Africa has a wealth of resources, knowledge, and untapped potential, and by fostering global collaboration, the continent can amplify its impact on the global stage and contribute to shaping a more equitable and inclusive world.

Lastly, Africa Integration Day serves as a reminder that the journey towards integration is an ongoing process that requires commitment, perseverance, and adaptability. It is not without its challenges, and setbacks may arise along the way. However, the spirit of unity and the collective determination of African nations will continue to propel the continent forward.

As we celebrate Africa Integration Day, let us embrace the diversity, richness, and vibrancy of the African continent. Let us build on the progress made, address the remaining obstacles, and work towards a future where African nations stand shoulder to shoulder, united in their pursuit of peace, prosperity, and sustainable development.

Africa Integration Day is not merely a symbolic gesture; it is a call to action, a reminder of the immense potential and power that lies within Africa when its nations come together. It is an occasion to celebrate our achievements, acknowledge our challenges, and renew our commitment to a united, integrated, and prosperous Africa. By working together, we can overcome any obstacle, fulfill our collective aspirations, and create a brighter future for generations to come.

Do celebrate your Africa Integration Day today.
