The African Genius Awards were founded with a clear mission: to honour those who have made remarkable contributions to Africa’s development across diverse fields such as science, technology, arts, culture, and social impact. In previous years, the African Genius Awards have celebrated a wide array of extraordinary individuals. Among them, Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, honoured for her significant contributions to public health and political leadership; Prof. Calestous Juma, whose pioneering work in sustainable development and innovation has left an indelible mark; and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, whose powerful literary works and social commentary continue to resonate globally. These laureates exemplify the spirit of African genius and serve as beacons of inspiration for many.

This year, the African Genius Awards are proud to announce an impressive and diverse group of finalists, each of whom has demonstrated remarkable ingenuity and impact in their respective fields:
Nigeria:
- John Amanam: A pioneering sculptor celebrated for creating hyper-realistic prosthetic limbs for people of colour. His groundbreaking work addresses the representation gap in prosthetics, offering culturally sensitive solutions for amputees. - Dr. Oluyinka Olutoye: A celebrated pediatric surgeon known for his pioneering fetal surgery techniques. Ghana:
- Patrick Awuah Jr.: The visionary founder of Ashesi University, known for its innovative approach to education. Libya:
- Hajer Sharief: A peace and human rights activist, co-founder of the organization “Together We Build It”. Malawi:
- Theresa Kachindamoto: A traditional leader known for her efforts to end child marriage and promote education for girls in her community. As a senior chief, she has annulled hundreds of child marriages and advocated for policies supporting children’s rights. Theresa Kachindamoto’s courageous leadership and dedication to protecting children make her a deserving nominee.
South Africa:
- Dr. Imtiaz Sooliman: The founder of Gift of the Givers, the largest disaster response NGO of African origin. His humanitarian efforts have provided critical aid in numerous global crises. Dr. Imtiaz Sooliman’s unparalleled contributions to humanitarian work and disaster relief make him an excellent candidate.
- Nokugcina Elsie Mhlophe: Known as Gcina Mhlophe, she is a storyteller, poet, playwright, and author. Her work in preserving African oral traditions and folklore has made significant cultural contributions. Nokugcina Elsie Mhlophe’s efforts to keep African heritage alive make her a deserving nominee.
- Prof. Mashudu Tshifularo: A groundbreaking medical doctor and professor who performed the world’s first middle-ear transplant using 3D-printed bones. His innovative work in otology has revolutionized treatment options for hearing loss. Prof. Mashudu Tshifularo is nominated for his pioneering contributions to medical science and healthcare.
- Prof. Abdon Atangana: A full professor at the Institute for Groundwater Studies, University of the Free State, known for his research in fractional calculus and applications, numerical and analytical methods, and modeling. Somalia:
- Waris Dirie: A model, author, and human rights activist who has dedicated her life to combating female genital mutilation (FGM). As the founder of the Desert Flower Foundation, she raises awareness and provides support for FGM survivors. Sudan:
- Dr. Nahid Toubia: A surgeon and women’s health rights activist. Tunisia:
- Aya Chebbi: A diplomat, activist, and the first African Union Youth Envoy. Zambia:
- Mwangala Maunga: An 18-year-old environmentalist and climate change advocate. Mwangala Maunga’s commitment to environmental advocacy and her impactful initiatives make her an ideal candidate.
