As a former South African Consul-General: Milan, Italy (2012-2016) and Chief Director: Public Diplomacy at the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (2009-2012), let me welcome yesterday’s decision to lift the suspension of ECOWAS membership for Burkina Faso, Guinea, Mali, and Niger which I believe signals a significant opportunity for positive change in Africa, and as a brand committed to the continent’s growth and prosperity, we applaud this development.
While the suspension was originally implemented to uphold constitutional democracy and deter military coups, its unintended consequences have highlighted the need for a more nuanced and pragmatic approach to regional governance. As a brand deeply invested in the well-being of African nations, we recognise the importance of addressing underlying issues driving political instability and economic vulnerability.
It is undeniable that the erosion of constitutional democracy through military coups is a threat to stability and progress in Africa. However, the blanket suspension of these countries from ECOWAS and the AU failed to address the underlying issues driving these coups. Instead, it isolated these nations from crucial regional cooperation mechanisms, leaving them vulnerable to economic exploitation and dominance by non-African powers.
The continued engagement of countries like the United States, Russia, China, and even France with these suspended nations underscores the inadequacy of unilateral African sanctions. While the AU and ECOWAS have a duty to uphold democratic norms and principles, they must also recognise the limitations of their influence in a globalised world where bilateral relations often trump regional solidarity.
Our commitment to Africa goes beyond business; it’s about fostering sustainable development and empowerment. The isolation of these countries from regional cooperation mechanisms only served to hinder progress and left them susceptible to exploitation by external powers.
We believe in the power of collaboration and dialogue to overcome challenges and build a brighter future for Africa. By engaging with all stakeholders, including countries facing political turmoil, we can foster inclusive growth and stability across the continent.
Moreover, recent events in the Democratic Republic of Congo highlight the urgent need for African-led solutions to regional security challenges. As a brand deeply rooted in African soil, we stand ready to support initiatives that promote peace, stability, and prosperity for all.
Moreover, recent events in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) highlight the imperative for African nations to take ownership of regional security and stability. The withdrawal of the United Nations Organization Stabilisation Mission (MONUSCO) necessitates a robust African-led response to prevent a vacuum of authority and to safeguard the DRC’s vast resources for the benefit of its people.
Opposition voices questioning South Africa’s decision to deploy troops to the DRC reveal a narrow perspective that fails to grasp the geopolitical importance of African unity and self-reliance. The DRC’s mineral wealth and strategic location make it a crucial battleground for global influence, and Africa cannot afford to cede control to external actors.
In light of these challenges, the African Union must adopt a more pragmatic and strategic approach to diplomacy. While upholding democratic principles remains paramount, it is equally essential to engage with all stakeholders, including countries facing political turmoil, to foster dialogue and reconciliation.
Diplomacy, after all, is the art of the possible. By embracing pragmatism while remaining steadfast in its commitment to democracy and good governance, the African Union can navigate the complexities of regional politics and secure a brighter future for all Africans. Let us seize this moment to chart a course towards prosperity, peace, and self-determination for the continent.
As we move forward, our brand remains committed to championing pragmatic diplomacy and working collaboratively with governments, organisations, and communities to drive positive change. Together, we can navigate the complexities of regional politics and secure a brighter future for Africa and its people.
Tujenge Afrika Pamoja! Let’s Build Africa Together.
Enjoy your weekend.
