Emerging from the vibrant township of KwaThema, Ama’2K_Entertainers is a talented group of five young amapiano dancers who are turning their passion for dance into a movement that reflects the heart and soul of South African youth. With roots in the lively and rhythmic world of amapiano, the crew – founded by Tumelo and Mpho – embodies the creative spirit of the Ama2K generation (those born in the 2000s), a generation known for redefining South African street culture through music, dance, and fashion.
From a young age, these performers felt the magnetic pull of dance. “We started dancing as kids; it’s always been something that came naturally to us,” Tumelo explained. “We knew we wanted to do more than just dance for fun. We wanted to create a brand, a movement that could inspire others, especially those from backgrounds like ours.”
What is Amapiano?
Amapiano is more than just a music genre – it’s a cultural force. Originating in South Africa in the early 2010s, amapiano combines house beats with jazz, lounge, and deep bass elements to create a unique sound that has captured audiences worldwide. The genre’s soulful melodies and powerful rhythms have not only made it a staple on dance floors but have also birthed a rich dance culture. Amapiano dancers often create intricate, high-energy routines that showcase precision, style, and personality, making it a natural fit for Ama’2K_Entertainers, who are keen to bring new moves and ideas to the genre.
“We have our own way of interpreting amapiano,” Mpho shared. “We’re always experimenting and coming up with routines that highlight who we are as a group. We love the way amapiano connects people, and we want to be part of taking it to the next level.”
Chasing the Dream
Starting out wasn’t easy. The group, made up of five boys, began rehearsing in a small space, practicing day after day to perfect their routines. In the early days, they filmed their dance moves on basic equipment, uploading clips on social media to share their progress and gain visibility. Slowly, their following grew, and with it, opportunities to perform at local events. “There were days we weren’t sure if anyone would notice us,” Tumelo admitted. “But every time someone commented on our videos or invited us to perform, it showed us we were moving in the right direction.”
Their dedication has paid off, and today, Ama’2K_Entertainers is invited to perform at various events, bringing their amapiano routines to audiences eager for something fresh and engaging. But for the team, this is just the beginning. “We still have a lot we want to achieve,” Tumelo emphasized. “Performing on bigger stages, inspiring more young people from townships like ours, and even creating shows that will give a platform to others. That’s what drives us every day.”
Inspiration and Impact
One of Ama’2K_Entertainers’ main motivations is to make a lasting impact on their community and beyond. They want to show that with vision, hard work, and unity, anyone can overcome challenges and achieve their dreams. “If we can inspire even one kid to believe in their talent and work hard, we’ve done something meaningful,” Tumelo said.
Their performances aren’t just about entertaining crowds but about connecting with them on a deeper level. The group choreographs routines that reflect their personal stories and the collective spirit of their community. Through dance, they address themes of resilience, unity, and pride in one’s roots, all while giving audiences an electrifying experience.
For Ama’2K_Entertainers, the future is bright. As they continue to sharpen their skills and gain recognition, they remain humble and focused on their mission: to be the best performers they can be, inspiring others to dream big. “We know that with each performance, we’re building something special,” Tumelo said with a smile. “Our journey is just beginning, and we’re ready for whatever comes next.”
