African regionalism is a means to achieve continental unity, collective self-reliance, economic transformation, and create an agenda for solving African developmental challenges. Thus, the African Economic Community is the continental trading system contemplated by the 1991 Abuja Treaty. However, with the introduction, coming into force and operationalisation of the African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement, there appears to be some misunderstanding about the nexus of Africa integration framework’s actual role and current relevance of Abuja Treaty in AfCFTA?

Objective: This year’s memorial lecture seek to elicit stakeholders focus on the Abuja Treaty implementation phases and its relationship with the operationalisation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Agreement.

Amb Osakwe was Nigeria’s first Chief Trade Negotiator/ Director-General at the Nigerian Office for Trade Negotiations. He chaired the Negotiating Forum of the African Union (AU) from June 2017 – March 2018, during which time the negotiations were concluded on the Agreement Establishing the African Continental Free Trade Area. He worked with the World Trade Organization (WTO) Secretariat (1998–2017), during which he was the director of several WTO divisions. He lectured globally and published extensively in peer-reviewed journals on various subjects, including trade policy, fiscal and monetary policies; and, structural reforms.

His contribution to development through trade globally, continentally, regionally and nationally reminds us of how blessed we were to have Amb Chiedu Osakwe in our lives.
