Comrade (Cde) Lawrence “Phokes” Madimetja Phokanoka embodied values that transcended his time and left a legacy rooted in principles of integrity, humility, and a commitment to the collective good. His life was a testament to the power of conviction, inspired by Marxist-Leninist theory, which he adapted to the unique conditions and challenges of his era. Although his ideas never solidified into a formal doctrine, they reflected an evolving worldview shaped by the socio-political context in which he lived.

Can we, today, strive to emulate the values, ways, and ideas that guided his life? In doing so, we honour not just his memory but his vision of a progressive, inclusive, and just society.

The Hero’s Journey

Swiss psychiatrist Carl Gustav Jung described the archetype of a hero as one who rises from humble beginnings, achieves greatness, confronts adversity, and often sacrifices himself for the greater good. This archetype resonates with the life of Cde “Phokes.” He was a man of exceptional strength and resilience who confronted the challenges of his time with unwavering determination.

Jung reminds us that the unconscious is a natural phenomenon, containing all facets of human nature – light and dark, good and evil. Similarly, Cde “Phokes” understood the complexities of human existence and sought to address them through his teachings and actions.

Different philosophies offer various solutions to humanity’s struggles:
• Buddhists advocate for the Noble Eightfold Path as a guide to enlightenment.
• Christians emphasize faith in God as the foundation for a better world.
• Rationalists believe reason and intelligence can overcome societal challenges.

But what would the friends of Lawrence Madimetja Phokanoka say? Those who knew him would agree that his legacy lies in fostering dialogue, sharing ideas, and championing a progressive and scientific worldview.

A Platform for Progressive Thought

Cde “Phokes” was a leader who loved to exchange ideas and inspire others. Can we transform this platform into a modern-day “Silicon Valley” of social science, a hub of intellectual engagement guided by respect and decorum? By doing so, we bring ourselves closer to his values and carry forward his vision of a progressive and just society.
