At a press conference held this morning at the prestigious Maslow Hotel, Ntombi Gumede, the national director of the Miss Teen Universe Namibia and Miss Teen Universe South Africa pageants, as well as the founder of Ecotourism World pageants, unveiled the preparations for this year’s Miss Teen Universe. Gumede highlighted that South Africa’s participation began five years ago, with notable achievements including 1st and 4th Runner-Up positions before securing the coveted crown last year. As a result, South Africa earned the hosting rights for the upcoming event, a collaboration with Raising Future Leaders.
Emphasising the significance of hosting in South Africa, Gumede expressed the benefits for local brands and underscored the pageant’s status as the number one teen pageant in the country. Miss Universe’s international reputation, she noted, holds great potential for promoting tourism, with the global audience eagerly anticipating the event. Gumede emphasised the importance of spreading joy among children and emphasised that happy children lead to content parents, challenging existing perceptions about the country and highlighting its beauty and commitment to ubuntu and unity.

Beyond the pageant glamour, Gumede highlighted the queens’ active involvement in social responsibility through charity work. More than 10 young beauty queens are sent to various international pageants annually, fostering a sense of sisterhood among them. The live global broadcast of the event, scheduled for March 24th in Durban, provides an excellent opportunity to showcase the country to the world.
Miss Teen Universe Lynette Arce Garcia from Cuba, an advocate for inclusion, equality, and education, arrived in South Africa the previous night. Garcia, who runs the Be the Light foundation, inspires teenagers to aspire to greater heights. Encouraging parents to support their daughters in entering pageants, she emphasised that participation alone is a significant achievement, akin to wearing a crown.
Jameela Uiras, Miss Teen Universe Africa and Miss Teen Universe Namibia, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent Africa and called for continental unity. Advocating for beauty with purpose, Uiras emphasised the importance of vocational training as a primary vehicle for developing essential artisan skills required by the economy, challenging the notion that everyone must pursue a university education.

A public diplomacy arsenal
In the complex arena of international relations, countries often employ various tools to enhance their global image and promote positive perceptions abroad. While traditional methods such as diplomatic missions and cultural exchanges play crucial roles, unconventional yet impactful avenues are increasingly becoming part of a nation’s public diplomacy arsenal. One such unconventional element is the participation of national representatives in beauty pageants, with Miss Teen Universe emerging as a significant player in this realm.
Miss Teen Universe, a prestigious international beauty pageant, goes beyond the realms of glamour and aesthetics. It serves as a unique platform for young women to showcase not only their beauty but also their intellect, talent, and cultural pride. As these teen ambassadors represent their countries on the global stage, they inadvertently contribute to their nations’ public diplomacy efforts.
The participation of a country’s representative in Miss Teen Universe is akin to sending a cultural envoy who communicates non-verbally, transcending language barriers. The pageant provides an avenue for the expression of cultural diversity, allowing contestants to share aspects of their heritage, traditions, and values with a worldwide audience. In doing so, these young women become cultural ambassadors, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for their respective nations.
Moreover, the global reach of Miss Teen Universe offers an unparalleled opportunity for countries to showcase their positive attributes and dispel stereotypes. Beyond the catwalk, contestants engage in various activities, interviews, and social initiatives, allowing them to highlight the positive aspects of their homeland. This multifaceted approach enables countries to present a more nuanced and authentic image, steering public perceptions in a positive direction.

Ntombi concurs: “We serve as a cultural exchange program, sending our winners to represent our rainbow nation, South Africa, in the big 5 rated teen international pageants. We showcase the creativity of South African designers not only on a national level but also on an international platform. We partner with brands that are committed to youth empowerment, utilising brand marketing and exposure. Our winners serve as ambassadors for different brands, embodying the essence of our nation’s diversity and talent on the global stage.”
The impact of Miss Teen Universe extends beyond the pageant itself, as the contestants often continue to engage in philanthropy and social causes in their respective countries. By aligning with charitable endeavours, these young ambassadors further enhance the positive image of their nations, emphasising their commitment to social responsibility and community welfare.
The role of Miss Teen Universe in public diplomacy becomes particularly evident during the coronation ceremonies and related events. The attention generated by the pageant allows countries to leverage the spotlight to showcase their unique culture, tourism potential, and economic opportunities. This exposure can attract international interest and investment, contributing to the overall soft power of the nation.
It is essential to recognise that the influence of Miss Teen Universe in public diplomacy is not without its controversies. Critics argue that beauty pageants perpetuate narrow standards of beauty and objectify women. However, proponents contend that by empowering young women to be ambassadors for their countries, the pageant serves as a platform for personal growth, cultural exchange, and social impact.
The inclusion of Miss Teen Universe in a country’s public diplomacy arsenal represents a modern and innovative approach to international relations. As these teen ambassadors traverse the global stage, they contribute to a broader narrative that extends beyond physical beauty, promoting cultural exchange, fostering understanding, and showcasing the positive aspects of their nations. While the debate about the role of beauty pageants continues, there is no denying the impact they have on shaping global perceptions and influencing public diplomacy strategies.

The vote of thanks was succinctly but eloquently presented by Unamandla Vilakazi, who is only 15-year-old and from Kimberley. She has established her own foundation dedicated to promoting education and fostering mutual upliftment and empowerment. In her address, she emphasised the importance of standing together and supporting one another.
