The FSCA is excited to launch its inaugural hackathon aimed at promoting entrepreneurship and innovation amongst South Africa’s youth. The hackathon will see youth aged between 15 and 35 team up to create a web-based game that encourages Small Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) to start and grow their businesses.

The hackathon will serve to nurture creativity and innovation amongst the chosen participants. It will also help drive a need for entrepreneurship amongst the youth. With the current high unemployment rate in South Africa, it is becoming increasingly important for entrepreneurship to be encouraged. One of the most important ways for sustainable entrepreneurship to flourish is to disseminate financial literacy education catered for SMMEs that is packaged in innovative ways and suitable for all literacy levels.

Participants are requested to apply to enter the hackathon on www.fscahackathon.co.za before 14 April 2023. Shortlisted participants will be given the opportunity to create and present a mock-up of a web-based game focused on encouraging users to start and grow their businesses. All of the shortlisted participants will receive guidance throughout the hackathon.

The hackathon will test the shortlisted participants’ ability to use well-researched consumer financial education material to develop an interactive and educational game for a wide target audience. The participants will be supported throughout the process to ensure that they produce their best work.

The winner of the hackathon will win R20 000 and an opportunity to work with the FSCA’s ICT department to develop their winning idea. We look forward to welcoming the participants and highlighting their talents through the hackathon which takes place between 3-5 May 2023.
