The global community unites in acknowledging and commemorating the 15th year since the passing of the illustrious Mama Miriam Makeba, affectionately hailed as “Mama Africa,” who left an indelible mark on the world on November 9, 2008. Revered for her musical prowess, humanitarian efforts, and role as Goodwill Ambassador, Miriam Makeba’s legacy continues to inspire. In this milestone year, the Miriam Makeba Foundation extends an invitation to people worldwide to reflect on her impactful contributions and to embrace the principles of respect, love, and kindness that she embodied throughout her life.

Beyond the sombre remembrance of Mama Miriam Makeba, this year also marks the 60th Anniversary of her historic anti-apartheid speech at the United Nations General Assembly on July 16, 1963, in New York, USA— a pivotal moment in the fight against racial injustice.

To pay homage to this extraordinary woman, the “Legacy Series Presents Mama Africa – A Celebration Of Miriam Makeba” will unfold at the prestigious Untitled Basement in Braamfontein, Johannesburg. This musical odyssey is set to be led by the enchanting Zenzi Makeba Lee, the granddaughter of Miriam Makeba. Accompanying her on this musical journey are acclaimed Jazz virtuosos Afrika Mkhize, Dalisu Ndlazi, Sphelelo Mazibuko, and Lindelani Makeba Lee. The performance, scheduled for Sunday, 26 November 2023, commencing at 14h00 promises to be a mesmerising tribute at the heart of Braamfontein, Johannesburg, at Untitled Basement.

The commemorative day not only serves to honour Miriam Makeba’s unparalleled musical talent but also recognises her substantial contributions as a humanitarian and Goodwill Ambassador. Designating November 9 and the entire month as “Miriam Makeba Commemorative Day/Month,” the Miriam Makeba Foundation ensures an ongoing celebration of the first African Grammy Award winner.

Zenzi Makeba Lee, born in Manhattan, New York, embodies a rich blend of South African and American heritage. Music became an integral part of her identity from an early age, with her inaugural stage appearance at the Northsea Jazz Festival at the tender age of eight. A notable early chapter in her artistic journey included a role in an award-winning anti-apartheid film shot on location in Morocco and Conakry, Guinea, directed by Ben Barka.

Zenzi’s musical journey matured as she assumed the role of a backing vocalist for her iconic grandmother, Miriam Makeba, as well as for Hugh Masekela and the late Dizzy Gillespie during the “Live the Future Tour”, which traversed Europe and the United States of America. During this tour, she also had the opportunity to feature as a solo vocalist, delivering a poignant rendition of a traditional Congolese song titled “Milele.”

Following the “Live the Future Tour,” Zenzi pursued formal music education at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City, where she majored in composition and vocals. Her dedication to her craft was further showcased during the “Tour of Hope,” where she served as a backing vocalist for Miriam Makeba and Hugh Masekela, and she also took center stage with a soul-stirring a cappella rendition of the song “Mama,” dedicated to her late mother, grandmother, and mothers worldwide.

French Director Veronique Patte recognized Zenzi’s remarkable journey, producing a documentary titled “Mama,” which earned a nomination for “Best Documentary” at a film festival in France. In the documentary, Zenzi’s multifaceted talent and her unique contribution to the musical legacy of Miriam Makeba were celebrated.

Zenzi’s solo career took flight with the release of her first single, “State of Attraction,” serving as a prelude to her debut album, “Daynights,” under the banners of Universal Music and NLL Records Ltd. Her musical prowess garnered critical acclaim, leading to a nomination in the “Best Female Artist” category at the South African Music Awards (SAMA) in March 2000. Later that year, Zenzi received a KORA Award (African Music Awards) for “Most Promising Female Artist.”

Zenzi Lee’s journey is marked by her continuous dedication to music composition and songwriting. Over the years, she has not only composed her own songs but has also written and co-written numerous pieces for other artists, including the song “Homeland,” featured on Miriam Makeba’s Grammy Award-nominated album, “Homeland.”

As the world eagerly anticipates her upcoming album, “Wipe Your Tears,” Zenzi Makeba Lee offers a unique blend of original compositions, featuring traditional South African harmonies, modern Jazz influences, and soulful grooves and melodies. This album promises to be a testament to her artistic evolution and her commitment to preserving and innovating within the rich musical tapestry of South Africa.

Zenzi’s impact extends beyond the realm of music, as she featured prominently in the 2011 documentary/film “Mama Africa.” A collaborative effort between South African film company Millennium Films, German company StarhausProduktion, Finnish company Marianna Films, and the Miriam Makeba Foundation, this documentary pays homage to the life, times, and music of the late Dr. Miriam Makeba. The film debuted at the Berlindale Film Festival, Germany, in February 2011, where it received an award for popular demand. It continued to captivate audiences at the Durban International Film Festival in July of the same year.

In summary, Zenzi Makeba Lee stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of Miriam Makeba. Her journey, from early stage appearances and impactful roles in film to her pivotal contributions as a backing vocalist and solo artist, showcases a deep commitment to the cultural and musical heritage passed down through generations. As she takes the stage in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, for the “Legacy Series Presents Mama Africa – A Celebration Of Miriam Makeba”, Zenzi’s performance becomes a poignant bridge between past and present, ensuring that the spirit of “Mama Africa” lives on in the hearts of a new generation.
