A landmark moment in South Africa’s history unfolded on 31 October 2024 at Constitution Hill in Johannesburg with the unveiling of the Presidential Memorial and Heritage Park of South Africa (PMHPSA). Moderated by renowned Cameroonian academic Dr Sufhre Cletus and headlined by former Deputy President of the Republic of South Africa, HE Baleka Mbete. The event marked the beginning of a new chapter in preserving and celebrating the nation’s presidential heritage.
A Vision of Legacy and Leadership
The PMHPSA stands as a monumental tribute to South Africa’s presidents and the journey of the nation from colonial rule to democracy. Speaking at the launch, Professor Nozizwe King, the acclaimed historian and author of “The Book of South African Presidents”, emphasised the significance of this new landmark.
“South Africa’s presidential history is a tapestry woven from triumphs, sacrifices, and profound lessons,” said Prof King. “The Presidential Memorial and Heritage Park is not just a museum; it is a living testament to the resilience and ingenuity of our people. It allows us to reflect on the leadership that has shaped our nation while inspiring future generations to carry forward the torch of hope and progress.”
And who is this inspirational Prof King: “My journey began with my appointment as Ambassador of Hope, Peace, and Reconciliation to London during South Africa’s first democratic elections in 1994. At just 19 years old, I was entrusted with the responsibility of engaging in conversations and delivering formal presentations about our nation’s transition to democracy. This experience profoundly shaped my worldview and sparked a passion for creating platforms to celebrate our vibrant journey from apartheid to democracy,” she said with a wry smile.
“At the time, I was a first-year student at Wits Technikon. Upon returning from London, I decided to pivot my academic path, enrolling in Psychology studies at UNISA. I later pursued advanced studies in Social Sciences and Political Studies at California University, culminating in earning two doctorates from Ballsbridge University: a PhD in Philosophy by Publication and a PhD in Public Administration.
“In recognition of my academic and professional contributions, I was appointed as a Professor by Ballsbridge Online University and subsequently honoured as a Distinguished Professor by Ballsbridge University. In 2024, I was further invited to serve on the university’s Quality Assurance Committee.”
Prof King highlighted the unique role of the PMHPSA in fostering national unity. “By celebrating our diverse leadership – from the early presidencies to our democratic era – the park serves as a bridge between our past and our aspirations for the future. It’s a reminder that leadership, at its core, is about service, accountability, and the unwavering pursuit of justice.”

An Enduring Message of Hope
As the glittering event concluded, Prof King left the audience with a stirring message: “Leadership is not about perfection but about perseverance. It’s about making decisions that may not always be popular but are necessary for the greater good. The Presidential Memorial and Heritage Park is a beacon that reminds us of where we’ve come from and where we must still go.”
