The African Royals Edition is a concept inspired by Mmatlali Lucia Motloung who is the founder and CEO of Luc Mo Wines (Pty) Ltd. As a young African woman, Motloung created this special range after noticing that there were no stories of Africans told in the wine industry. Following a comprehensive research about the African Heritage, culture and history, Luc Mo Wines partnered with the AmaNdebele Royals from South Africa and Bakoena Ba Mopeli Royals and executed a ground-breaking wine range that includes unique hand-crafted wine accessories and wine tasting shows with a central focus on African stories.

The purpose of this legacy range is to embrace and articulate the true history of the African Royals and the communities which they represent in a respectable, elegant and sophisticated manner with the long-term ambition of also providing employment to the locals in the communities represented by the African Royal Families who are on board as participants of the Range.

The approximation of the wines with the character of each member of the royals inspiring the variety in the  African Royals Edition’s product brandline.

2018 Merlot

Because of his calm nature, His Majesty King Makhosonke II Mabhena is approximated to the Luc Mo Wines 2018 Merlot. The wine is rich and generous the nose shows ripe plums, dark chocolate and oak spice that opens up to blueberry and sour cherry with undertones of fennel. The palate has plush fruit with a firm tannin that will reward aging for optimal enjoyment.

Two very different vineyards in Stellenbosch supplied the fruit for this wine.

The first site, 350m above sea level on the south-west facing slopes of the Polkadraai Hills area, provides bright and juicy fruit with good acidity, tannic weight and absolute fruit density on the palate.

The second vineyard on the lower South Western slopes of Polkadraai Hills, offers Ribena Ripeness, generosity and length on the palate. Although soil types differ between the sites, they all have some form of decomposed granite lying over structured clay subsoil allowing for ample drainage and water retention when required.

The wine can be enjoyed with friends over a relaxed meal with leaner meats like duck and venison or tomato-based dishes like spaghetti bolognaise.

2022 Chenin Blanc

Her Majesty Queen Sekhothali Mabhena’s young beautiful, sassy and colourful personality comes out nicely in the 2022 Luc Mo Wines Chenin Blanc. The wine is made from unirrigated 40 year old Chenin vines planted in 1981. The vines are South West facing and are grown in decomposed granite soils high up on the farm at 300m above sea level. It is served best chilled, delectable with fish and shellfish, poultry and dishes with creamy sauces.

Bakoena ba Mopeli Royal Wines

2018 Cabernet Sauvignon

Morena E Moholo Wa Bakoena Ba Mopeli is a young and accomplished royal who hails from the province of Free State in Qwaqwa. He is approximated to the Luc Mo Wines 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon. Like His Majesty, the wine is classic and powerful with intense aromas of blue berries and black currant and dark chocolate. Oak aromas are well integrated and add to the complexity of the wine with underlying graphite and cigar box notes. Dark blackberry and plum flavours dominate the palate supported with a firm yet well integrated tannin structure and lingering finish.

The Vineyard that produces the wine are West South-West facing decomposed granite slopes are at an altitude of 100–150m above sea-level. The cooling sea breezes from the nearby Atlantic Ocean, keeps the vines and their fruit cool during the warmer days of the ripening period. In turn, this allows for the maximum flavour, colour and tannin development. The vines are trellised on a seven-wire hedge system and receive only supplementary drip irrigation.

The wine is well paired with steak, slow braised beef short rib or a hearty oxtail stew. We recommend decanting this wine and serving it between 16 and 18oC.

Her Majesty Queen Mother Mathokoana Mopeli

2018 Chardonnay

Her Majesty is an epitome of strength, sophistication, class and luxury. This Chardonnay has superb and distinctive aromas of citrus and pear with a subtle oak aroma of caramel and roasted almonds. The palate is both rich and refreshing with a combination of lime-citrus and white pear flavours. The wine is classically dry, yet luxuriously silky with superb viscosity and length.

The Chardonnay grapes are planted on some of the best South West facing slopes of the Polkadraai Hills.

The two vineyards are lying at altitudes that range from 200-320 meters above sea level; these higher South West facing elevated slopes tend to give wines beautiful natural acidity, resulting in a pleasant pungency and longevity. The richness and full-bodied fruit has been accentuated by the open canopies of the vineyards during ripening. All these flavours are backed with a minerality from the decomposed granite soils of the Polkadraai Hills. The wine is best served chilled and delicious with rich white meat like crocodile and pork sausages.
