Some lives are remembered for the milestones they achieve; others for the memories they create, the talents they share and the lives they touch along the way. Kgaugelo Noko Motlanthe, affectionately known as “Duke”, belonged to both. His was a life characterised by creativity, artistic expression, determination and, particularly in his later years, a profound and deeply personal commitment to his Christian faith.

Born on 18 September 1977, Duke was the first-born son of Mr Peter Lesiba Motlanthe and Mrs Chuene Magdaline Motlanthe. He grew into a man whose artistic gifts, engaging personality and passion for life left an enduring impression on those who had the privilege of knowing him. His journey was one of discovery, achievement, personal growth and, ultimately, a deepening relationship with God.

1. Education: The Foundations of a Creative Journey

Duke’s educational journey began at St Peter’s Preparatory School in Paulshof. He subsequently ventured to Grahamstown, where he attended St Andrew’s College for the first two years of his secondary education, before returning to Gauteng to complete his high school studies at Glenvista High School.

Following the successful completion of his Grade 12, Duke returned to Grahamstown, this time to pursue his academic ambitions at Rhodes University. In 1999, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in Drama, English and isiXhosa.

It was at Rhodes University that the foundations of his artistic and broadcasting career began to take shape. His involvement with campus radio, RMR (Rhodes Music Radio), as a DJ provided an early platform for his natural flair for communication, entertainment and connecting with audiences. His personality and distinctive broadcasting style soon earned him the memorable nickname, the “Duke of Grahamstown”, affectionately shortened to “DoG”.

That nickname would remain a fitting reflection of the personality and presence that became synonymous with Duke throughout his life.

2. An Artistic Journey: A Talent Across Many Stages

Duke’s passion for the performing arts was not merely an interest; it was a calling that he pursued with commitment, versatility and considerable talent. He established himself as a gifted freelance actor, singer, master of ceremonies and voice-over artist, making his mark across different platforms in South Africa’s entertainment and creative industries.

His acting career saw him appear in several popular television soap operas and telenovelas, as well as prominent commercial productions. He was equally at home on the theatre stage, where his performances in various productions took him beyond South Africa’s borders through international theatre tours.

One of the significant milestones in his musical journey came in 2002, when he was shortlisted as a semi-finalist in the inaugural season of M-Net’s Idols South Africa. This achievement was an affirmation of his vocal ability and his determination to pursue his musical aspirations.

His talents extended beyond acting and singing. Duke distinguished himself as a voice-over artist and also had a stint as a DJ on Highveld Stereo. His exceptional communication skills, engaging personality and ability to command an audience made him a sought-after master of ceremonies for corporate events. He also lent his voice and presentation skills to training and promotional productions.

Across these different artistic disciplines, Duke brought his own individuality, professionalism and passion. Whether performing before an audience, behind a microphone or appearing on screen, he understood the importance of giving his best.

His artistic journey was a testament to the breadth of his abilities and his willingness to explore the many possibilities of creative expression. He leaves behind a legacy that extends beyond the productions in which he appeared to the audiences he entertained and the colleagues with whom he shared his craft.

3. A Journey of Faith: Finding Purpose in Christ

Although Duke was born and raised in a family of devoted Christian parents, his personal relationship with Christ deepened significantly in his early forties. This marked an important and transformative chapter in his life, as faith became an increasingly central part of his identity and daily existence.

His Christian roots went back to his childhood association with Christian Gospel Outreach (CGO). As his personal commitment to Christ matured, he embraced his spiritual journey with remarkable enthusiasm and sincerity. He became an avid student of the Bible, dedicating himself to understanding God’s Word and growing in his relationship with Him.

His spiritual development included successfully completing the Discipleship and Leadership Programmes at Grace Bible Church. He actively participated in his local Home Cell Group and became a committed member of the Church’s Healing Ministry Team.

These were not simply church activities or formal programmes; they reflected a genuine desire to grow spiritually, serve others, participate in Christian fellowship and cultivate a closer walk with Christ.

For those who witnessed this chapter of Duke’s life, his faith represented a deeply personal journey of transformation. It was a source of strength, conviction and purpose, and an important dimension of the man he became.

4. Family and Loved Ones: The Relationships That Mattered Most

Beyond his artistic accomplishments and professional engagements, Duke was a son, husband, father, brother, uncle and friend. These relationships formed an important part of his life and the legacy he leaves behind.

In July 2018, Duke married Reabetswe Grace Mphasha. Their marriage was blessed with a beautiful and bubbly daughter, Bonolo, who remained a precious and cherished part of his life.

Duke is survived by his beloved wife, Reabetswe, and their daughter, Bonolo; his parents, Mr Peter Lesiba Motlanthe and Mrs Chuene Magdaline Motlanthe; his three brothers, Thato, Tumisho and Mpho; his sister, Ditebogo; and his two nephews, James and Tebogo, whom Bonolo fondly refers to as “my brothers”.

His passing leaves an immeasurable void in the lives of those closest to him, as well as among his extended family, friends, professional colleagues and members of his church community.

While the pain of losing him is profound, the family can draw comfort from the memories they shared, the love that bound them together and the many dimensions of his life that will continue to live in their hearts.

5. The Man We Remember: Passion, Integrity and Excellence

Perhaps one of Duke’s most defining attributes was the manner in which he approached everything he undertook. He brought passion, discipline and integrity to his pursuits, accompanied by an unmistakable desire to achieve excellence.

He understood his gifts and was determined to use them. Whether in the performing arts, broadcasting, corporate engagements or his spiritual commitments, he approached his responsibilities with dedication and a determination to give his very best.

We celebrate the actor, the singer, the broadcaster, the voice-over artist and the master of ceremonies. We celebrate the many platforms on which he expressed his creativity and the professional milestones that marked his journey.

But beyond these accomplishments, we celebrate Duke the person: the son who was raised in a loving family, the husband and father whose family remained precious to him, the brother and uncle, the friend and colleague, and the man whose faith became an increasingly important anchor in his life.

His story reminds us that a person’s legacy cannot be measured exclusively by professional achievements or public recognition. It is equally reflected in the relationships nurtured, the values upheld, the gifts shared and the lives touched along the way.

Duke’s life may have been cut short, but it was not without purpose. He lived, created, performed, loved and believed. In doing so, he left behind memories and contributions that will continue to speak long after his voice has fallen silent.

As we bid him farewell, we find particular comfort in the words of one of his favourite scriptures, quoted in the King James Version of the Bible:

“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.”

2 Timothy 4:7

These words capture something deeply meaningful about Duke’s journey, particularly his commitment to his faith in the later years of his life. They remind us that life is not simply about the distance travelled, but also about the purpose with which the journey is undertaken and the faith with which it is completed.

Farewell, Duke.

Your life was a gift, your talent a blessing, your faith an inspiration and your memory a lasting legacy.

The stages on which you performed may now be silent, and the microphones through which you entertained may have fallen quiet, but the music of your life will continue to resonate in the hearts of those who loved you.

You will be remembered, celebrated and dearly missed.

Rest in eternal peace, Duke.
