Sound of Hope, a South African non-profit organisation dedicated to breaking down barriers to hearing healthcare, today celebrated Professor Mashudu Tshifularo of the University of Pretoria for receiving the prestigious 2026 Discovery Health Leadership Award. The award, presented by Discovery Health Chief Medical Officer Maurice Goodman in collaboration with the KZNDHC, recognises exceptional leadership, innovation, and commitment to patient care in South Africa.
Professor Tshifularo has dedicated his career to advancing otorhinolaryngology and developing accessible solutions for people affected by hearing loss.
In 2019, he and his team pioneered a world-first surgical procedure utilizing 3D-printed middle-ear bones.
Sound of Hope is thrilled to note that this remarkable innovation has recently secured all necessary regulatory, ethical, and licensing clearances, bringing it closer to patients who desperately need it.
In a country where 1 in 6 South Africans lives with some degree of hearing loss, and where the cost of hearing restoration remains prohibitively high for the majority, innovations like Professor Tshifularo’s are not just medical milestones—they are lifelines.
“At Sound of Hope, our mission is to ensure that no one is left trapped in silence due to financial or systemic barriers,” said Donald Pillai, CEO and Campaign Director of Sound of Hope. “Professor Tshifularo’s groundbreaking work with 3D-printed middle-ear bones exemplifies the exact kind of clinical excellence, imagination, and purpose we need to transform hearing healthcare in South Africa. We congratulate him on this richly deserved recognition and stand in solidarity with his vision to develop future healthcare professionals who will continue to push the boundaries of what is possible.”
Professor Tshifularo’s contributions extend far beyond the operating theatre.
Through his academic leadership, he continues to inspire medical students and specialists to pursue difficult questions and remain steadfast in their service to patients, ensuring a sustainable pipeline of skilled healthcare professionals for the country.
Sound of Hope remains committed to supporting and amplifying innovations and leaders who make the dream of restored hearing a reality for all South Africans.
