Combatting a Pressing Issue
Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) remain significant societal challenges in our province and across the nation, with alarming rates of violence affecting individuals of all genders. This pervasive issue disrupts nearly every aspect of life. To address this, Mpumalanga will host the Second Annual Red Carpet Gender-Based Violence and Femicide Gala, a pivotal event aimed at supporting and empowering the caregivers who are at the forefront of combating GBVF.

Objectives of the Gala
The gala, presented by Blessing M Holdings in partnership with Shanei Born and Sello Morule Foundation, has several critical objectives designed to support and uplift caregivers while fostering community and business engagement:
1. Healing and Empowerment: The event will create a safe, supportive environment for caregivers from various sectors and organisations. This space will empower and equip them to continue their crucial work, ensuring they can positively impact their communities.
2. Fostering Business Connections: The gala will serve as a platform for local businesses to connect with potential customers, enhancing economic opportunities within the community.
3. NGO Collaboration: It will also link NGOs with potential sponsors and partners who can support ongoing community projects, thereby strengthening the impact of these initiatives.
4. Project Handover: The event will feature the handover of several community projects that have been active throughout the year, highlighting the progress and future plans for these initiatives.

Concept and Background
The event is built on the concept, “You Cannot Pour from an Empty Cup,” a notion developed after thorough research by the organising team. The findings underscored the high levels of stress, depression, and mental health challenges faced by GBVF caregivers. These individuals often present themselves professionally, yet they bear immense emotional and psychological burdens. Their well-being is essential, as they are the backbone of efforts to combat GBVF in our communities.

Inspirational Speakers
The gala will feature notable speakers who are survivors of GBVF, offering their stories and insights to inspire and guide caregivers:
– Ms. Sophie Ndaba: A respected figure, Ndaba will discuss mental health and strategies for navigating personal and professional crossroads, offering practical advice to caregivers facing similar challenges.
– Mr. Martin Pelders of MatrixMen: Pelders, who endured sexual abuse by multiple individuals, will share his journey and stress the importance of men speaking out and seeking help. His talk will address the destructive outcomes of silence, such as anger, substance abuse, and violence, and encourage men to seek support.
– Mel Ferguson: Author of “When Love Kills,” Ferguson will discuss the intersection of GBVF with various societal sectors, emphasising that GBVF affects individuals regardless of gender, race, culture, religion, or status.

Opportunities for Businesses and NGOs
The gala presents several opportunities for businesses and NGOs:
– Strategic Market Positioning: Businesses will have the chance to connect with their target customers in a meaningful way.
– NGO Sponsorships: NGOs will be able to network with potential sponsors and partners, facilitating support for their community projects.
– Brand Visibility: Local brands will benefit from pre-event advertising on various media platforms, enhancing their visibility and engagement with the community.

Community Empowerment
The gala will also celebrate the handover of eight ongoing community projects, underscoring the commitment to community empowerment and sustainable development. These projects, driven by local organisations and supported by the event, aim to create lasting positive change in the region.

Addressing the Root Causes
The event’s message, “We cannot expect a broken man to be a sound father, husband, and brother,” highlights the importance of addressing the root causes of GBVF. The gala will promote recovery programs for perpetrators and male survivors of GBVF, facilitating their reintegration into the community as responsible and supportive individuals.
