The Lawrence Madimetja Phokanoka Foundation (LMPF) extends its heartfelt congratulations to our esteemed Trustee, Dr Philemon Mphathi Mjwara, on being conferred an Honorary Doctor of Philosophy degree by the University of Stellenbosch. This remarkable recognition is a tribute to a lifetime of unwavering dedication to the advancement of science, technology, and innovation in South Africa and beyond.

Dr Mjwara’s career has been a shining beacon of intellectual excellence and public service. From his early days as a physicist and lecturer, to his pioneering leadership in science policy and institution-building, he has left an indelible mark on the national system of innovation. As the Director-General of the Department of Science and Innovation for nearly two decades, Dr Mjwara spearheaded critical initiatives including South Africa’s National Research and Development Strategy, the 10-Year Innovation Plan, and the development of the White Paper on Science, Technology and Innovation and its Decadal Plan. His strategic vision and tireless work ethic have helped shape a future-facing innovation ecosystem designed to serve the developmental needs of our country and continent.

Beyond his many accolades, Dr Mjwara has remained a man of humility and substance – an intellectual diplomat now serving our nation as the first full-time Ambassador to UNESCO, further affirming his stature on the global stage.

As the LMPF, we are deeply proud to have Dr Mjwara as part of our family. His enduring commitment to knowledge generation, human capital development, and policy innovation aligns perfectly with our mission to empower communities through ethical leadership and developmental foresight. This honorary doctorate is not only a recognition of his individual brilliance, but a celebration of what is possible when integrity, vision, and service meet.

As a Foundation rooted in the legacy of ethical leadership and nation-building, the Lawrence Madimetja Phokanoka Foundation (LMPF) actively promotes the study and advancement of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects, particularly among historically disadvantaged communities. We believe that STEM education is a powerful lever for social mobility, economic empowerment, and long-term national competitiveness. By investing in STEM-focused interventions – from school-level awareness to postgraduate scholarships and mentorship programmes – we aim to cultivate a generation of innovators, problem-solvers, and critical thinkers. In a world increasingly defined by technological disruption and knowledge economies, South Africa’s ability to lift its people out of poverty and secure a sustainable future lies in harnessing the transformative power of science and innovation. Dr Mjwara’s life work exemplifies this vision, and we are proud to walk in his footsteps as we build a more inclusive, capable, and prosperous society.

Congratulations, Dr Mjwara. Your journey continues to inspire a generation of thought leaders and change-makers. May this honour further propel your work in shaping a knowledge-driven society for the benefit of all humanity.
