In a significant development set to transform air travel between Nigeria and Uganda, Uganda Airlines has announced plans to commence direct flight operations between Entebbe and Lagos. Effective from Thursday, October 19, 2023, travelers will have the opportunity to experience non-stop flights between the two countries for the first time. This news comes as a game-changer for both Nigerian and Ugandan travelers.
Before this announcement, Nigerians looking to explore Uganda or other East African destinations typically relied on airlines such as Kenya Airways and South African Airways. The addition of Uganda Air to this route not only introduces healthy competition but also has the potential to lead to more affordable airfares for passengers.
One of the most significant advantages of this new route is the elimination of connecting flights and the reduction of travel time. Currently, it takes passengers between 9 to 12 hours to make the journey from Nigeria to Entebbe, with various layovers and stopovers. With the introduction of non-stop flights, this travel time is set to be drastically reduced to just four hours.
Mr. Adedayo Olawuyi, the Chief Commercial Officer (COO) of Uganda Airlines, emphasized the strategic importance of Nigeria as a destination. With a population exceeding 200 million people, Nigeria stands as one of Africa’s largest economies, making it an attractive and convenient choice for international travel. The goal is to provide passengers with a seamless and efficient means of connecting between the two countries.
Furthermore, as there are currently no direct flight services between Entebbe and Lagos, this new route holds the promise of fostering trade, tourism, and facilitating family visits between the two nations. Nigeria’s status as an economic powerhouse on the continent presents a wealth of opportunities for travel and trade that the new direct flights aim to capitalize on.
Airfares in Nigeria have faced significant inflation in recent months, partly due to the depreciation of the local currency, the naira. This new direct route not only offers convenience but also the prospect of more competitive pricing for travelers, providing a welcome relief to those facing rising air travel costs.
The commencement of direct flights between Lagos and Entebbe is set to redefine the air travel landscape between Nigeria and Uganda, offering a faster, more cost-effective, and efficient way for travelers to connect between the two nations. As October 19, 2023 approaches, travelers can look forward to a new era of accessibility and convenience in their journeys.
