In a heartfelt closing address at the recent Kgalema Motlanthe Foundation conference, former South African President and Foundation Patron Kgalema Motlanthe expressed deep gratitude to attendees and staff while underscoring the importance of optimism, scientific rigor, and a forward-looking approach to societal challenges.

Motlanthe began by acknowledging the efforts of all participants, including presenters, session chairs, and the resort’s staff, whose seamless support, he noted, contributed to the success of the event. “They are working like a well-oiled machine,” he said. He humorously observed that many conferences falter due to issues with food and logistics, “but we had none of those headaches in this beautiful venue,” he added appreciatively.

Reflecting on the scientific nature of the presentations, Motlanthe emphasized that the data-driven insights offered at the conference were essential. “None of them was a thumbs-up,” he noted, underscoring the presentations’ rigorous, research-based foundation. He urged attendees to value the role of science in confronting today’s pressing issues and translating ideas into actionable plans, stating, “We must all appreciate and take to heart the role of science in our lives.”

Motlanthe also addressed the challenges associated with advancing technology, including artificial intelligence and the global competition in areas like semiconductor production. Yet, despite these complex issues, he shared an uplifting message. “As the scientists said, they are optimistic about the future,” he recalled. “There is no advantage in talking ourselves into depression by bombarding ourselves with negatives. We should be positive and optimistic.”

The former president concluded with a powerful reminder of the duty owed to future generations. “We actually owe a great debt to the future. The past we learn from, but it’s the future that really deserves our duty, effort, and obligation at all times,” he asserted.

Closing with well-wishes for attendees, Motlanthe invited everyone to enjoy a meal before their journeys home. In a touching sign-off in his native language, he thanked the gathering from “the bottom of our hearts,” reflecting the warmth and optimism that had underscored his address.
